Typeform hack exposes Council data

Several New Zealand councils have been affected by a security vulnerability in surveying software Typeform.

About 2800 Waikato people may be affected after using online forms created by Typeform to share views with Hamilton City Council, Waikato District Council, or Waipā District Council.

Names, email addresses and, in some cases, phone numbers could have been accessed by the hacker, though Typeform said it shut the intruder out within half an hour.

Some Australian organisations were also affected, including Cairns Regional Council and the the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.

Barcelona-based Typeform noticed the data security breach on June 27 and had issued a statement admitting that it had suffered a breach caused by attackers downloading a “partial backup” of the customer data stored on its software.
